Fan Xian was born in an old empire called Southern Qing, but he has memories from the 21st century. He grew up in a small town as the illegitimate son of the Minister of Finance, taken care of by his grandmother. His mother, Ye Qing Mei, used to be a famous inventor and created the country's spy network called the Overwatch Department, but she was killed soon after Fan Xian was born. Since then, he has been protected by his mother's bodyguard, Wu Zhu, who taught him martial arts and poison-making, and Fan Xian also uses his modern knowledge to help him.
One day, after surviving an assassination attempt, Fan Xian decides to go to the capital city to find out more about his mother's mysterious death and his own strange memories. He thinks of himself as unimportant and wants to know why anyone would want to harm him. While in the capital, he meets Lin Wan Er, the sickly illegitimate daughter of Princess Royal, and falls in love with her. But he doesn't know that the emperor has chosen Lin Wan Er to be his wife so that Fan Xian can take over his mother's old job in the Royal Treasury.
In the capital, Fan Xian gets caught up in the power struggles between the Emperor and his two Princes, as well as the Overwatch Department, and starts to question who he really is. This leads him to re-evaluate his life goals and give up his original plan of just living for fun.
